4th Annual Iowa Organic Conference to be held November 1
AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa State University Organic Agriculture Program (Departments of Agronomy and Horticulture) will be holding their 4th Annual Iowa Organic Conference on Monday, November 1 in the Scheman Building on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames.
"We expect an excellent turnout for this year's conference," said Dr. Kathleen Delate, director of the Organic Ag Program at Iowa State. "Last year's conference drew 320 farmers, agricultural professionals, and educators from around the country to discuss organic crop and livestock production, marketing, and grants available to organic producers. This year, more than 40 vendors and educational exhibits will participate in an all-day trade show."
The keynote speaker for this year's conference will be Chuck Hassebrook, executive director for the Center for Rural Affairs speaking about "Working Together on Behalf of Family Farms." Featured speakers include Dr. Fred Kirschenmann from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture speaking on the Leopold Center's "Grass-Based Initiative," Dr. George Bird from Michigan State University speaking on "Know your Soil Biology for Improved Organic Farming," Dr. Lewis Jett from the University of Missouri speaking on "Organic Greenhouse-High Tunnels for the Midwest," and Dr. Kathleen Delate from Iowa State University speaking on "Organic Standards Update."
