Applications being accepted for Life in Iowa/Leopold Center grants

AMES, Iowa -- Life in Iowa and the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University are partnering to offer grants that will help support summer 2005 student interns working in sustainable marketing and local food systems, and environmental and community development.

Through its research and education programs, the Leopold Center supports the development of profitable farming systems that conserve natural resources. Iowa producers, businesses, organizations and communities are encouraged to propose internships that fit the Leopold Center's work and apply for a grant. A total of $15,000 will be distributed with a maximum of $1,500 grant per internship position. Funds must be used to offset intern salary costs. Applications are due Jan. 14. Matching funds are required.

Life in Iowa is an internship program of Iowa State University Extension. Iowa State undergraduate students from all academic areas study how to be effective Iowa citizens, and then intern with businesses or nonprofit organizations during the summer. Each student contributes 100 hours to a local civic project in addition to the internship work. The internships are a minimum of 30 hours per week for 10 weeks.

Grant recipients will be selected based on

* an internship that cultivates knowledge and understanding of local and regional culture, food systems, natural resources or alternative farming practices, and furthers efforts to create a sustainable quality of life in Iowa;
* an effective and valuable learning experience for a student;
* identification of a mentor who can guide the student at work and in the community; and
* completion of Life in Iowa employer forms (www.lifeiniowa.org/business.asp).
