Iowa Takes Second in International 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl
AMES, IA - Iowa is runner-up in the National Invitational 4-H Dairy Quiz
Bowl that took place at the North American International Livestock Exposition,
Nov.
6, 2004.
A test of knowledge, the Dairy Quiz Bowl provides an educational experience
to all youth participants and is regarded as a valuable educational tool
in the dairy industry according to Mary Clancy, a program coordinator with
Iowa
State University Extension 4-H Youth Development.
The Champion Iowa Team (Delaware County) placed second among 20 teams and placed higher than any Iowa team has in their 24 years of participation. The team made their way past Wisconsin and Tennessee in the first two rounds, but was topped by New Hampshire in the third round, which sent them to the consolation bracket. They sailed through three tough matches against Virginia, Minnesota and New Hampshire, respectively, before meeting the unbeaten Maryland team in the final. Iowa handily won the match, forcing another round, but Maryland won.
The National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl is one of the nation's most challenging contests for dairy industry youth and attracts young people from across the United States who test their knowledge of dairy cattle and dairy products.
The North American International Livestock Exposition, the largest all-breed, purebred livestock event in the world, attracted more than 22,000 entries in nine livestock types and more than 225,000 visitors.
Youth contests, such as the 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl, are prestigious events that livestock leaders sponsor to assure that youth have solid knowledge for future leadership activities.
