Iowa 4-H'ers To Attend National 4-H Congress in Atlanta
AMES, Iowa -- Twenty-three Iowa 4-H members will learn about the environment, from acid rain and alligators to rain forest and smog, when they attend the National 4-H Congress Nov. 26 to Nov. 30.
Delegates to the annual youth leadership development conference, which emphasizes community service, will volunteer with Clover House, a 4-H Habitat for Humanity project in Atlanta. This year's conference, Growing into the Future, also will focus on environmental awareness and population, money, and food differences across the world through a global village exercise. A cultural evening has been added to the 2004 Congress to expose delegates to a variety of forms of the arts.
Iowa's Congress delegates are selected through interviews and evaluation of support materials. They are chosen for their leadership, citizenship and overall achievement in the 4-H program.
"It is an honor to be selected to attend National 4-H Congress," Brenda Allen, Iowa State University Extension 4-H program specialist, said. "But it is also a wonderful educational opportunity. The delegates learn about leadership, service and cultural differences."
Sharon Wasteny, Iowa State University Cooperative Extension direction for Union County, and Neil Wubben, Iowa State University Cooperative Extension education director for Mitchell County, will accompany the youth.
