Create, Connect, Imagine with ISU Extension at the Des Moines Arts Festival
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Youth attending the Des Moines Arts Festival this year will have a lot of new and fun hands-on activities on Locust Street Bridge. Iowa State University (ISU) Extension 4-H Youth Development will be one of the premium sponsors of the festival, with its primary focus on youth. ISU Extension will cooperate with other programs to celebrate the festival and highlight the role of art in creating a positive environment for youth.
"As a member of the ISU Extension Citizens Advisory Council, I have been amazed and proud to learn of the wonderful programs Extension offers Iowa families," said Mo Dana, executive director for the Des Moines Arts Festival. "We are delighted to have the opportunity to showcase these important works during the 2004 Des Moines Arts Festival."
The ISU Extension's theme is "Create, Connect, Imagine," and exhibits will demonstrate how art plays a role in successful youth development programs from gardening to science and technology to community service. The different ISU Extension tents will include the following themes: gardening, 4-H, science and technology, adventure, health and fitness, families, quilts, Iowa 4-H Foundation, ISU Foundation and CY Shack. At each tent there will be a variety of displays, activities and crafts.
Some of the activities that will be offered are painting projects, dancing with the Iowa State dance troupe, strength self-assessment tests, and paper planes and bridge building.
Youth also can submit photos for the "Hot for Iowa" juried photo exhibit. The photos will show why kids love Iowa. Photo entries are due by June 11. For information on how to enter contact your local ISU Extension county office or contact Martha McCormick, ISU Extension youth field specialist, at (515) 261-4216 or mmcormik@iastate.edu.
The Des Moines Arts Festival starts Friday, June 25 at 4 p.m. and ends Sunday, June 27 at 4 p.m. It is the fifth-ranked art festival out of 600 others in the United States. This three-day festival will showcase the work of artists from all over the country. For information on how to volunteer at the Des Moines Arts Festival and for more general information contact Mo Dana, executive director of the festival at (515) 288-2258, ext. 101 or visit the Web site at www.desmoinesartfestival.org.
