Wilderness Trips Slated for Rocky Mountains, Boundary Waters
AMES, Iowa -- This July Iowans can watch for moose and timber wolves while canoeing the boundary waters and fish for trout while backpacking in the Rocky Mountains as part of the 2004 4-H wilderness trips series. Open to all Iowans age 14 and older, the trips are offered each summer by Iowa State University (ISU) Extension 4-H Youth Development.
The series, offered throughout July, also includes a horse packing trek in Colorado for adults. Each trip teaches specific wilderness skills such as wilderness ethics, living in tents without leaving a trace, cooking in the wild and portaging canoes.
The trips are designed specifically for adults or youths who are 14 to 18 years old and are led by experienced Iowa 4-H staff members and conservation experts. It is not necessary to be a member of 4-H or a strong athlete to participate.
For more information, contact your county ISU Extension office, call the state 4-H office at (515) 294-1017 or visit www.extension.iastate.edu/naturalresources. To register, contact pmondt@iastate.edu. The first trip departs July 10.
