Iowa Beef Center to Offer Information on National Identification Systems

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa Beef Center (IBC) exhibit at the Iowa Cattlemen's Association (ICA) Summer Convention will highlight ethanol co-products for cattle feeding and new beef ration software and will focus on the upcoming National Animal Identification System (NAIS).

"The national identification system for U.S. livestock is approaching quickly," says John Lawrence, Iowa State University (ISU) economist and director of the IBC. In fact, the USDA anticipates assigning identification numbers to every location holding livestock by the end of this year. "Producers need to know what to expect as this plan is implemented," Lawrence adds.

In addition to information regarding NAIS, the IBC will feature BRANDS, a new beef ration software program. Producers can try a live demonstration of the software at the booth. Additionally, producers can learn about ethanol co-products, which are promising new ingredients for the feed bunk.

The ICA Summer Conference is planned for June 24 and 25 at the Iowa State Center's Scheman Building in Ames, Iowa. For more information, contact ICA at (515) 296-2266. For more information about NAIS, visit the IBC's Web site, www.iowabeefcenter.org.

The IBC began operation in 1996 to support the growth and vitality of the beef cattle industry of the state. A part of ISU Extension, the IBC is the central access point for ISU programs related to the beef industry.
