4-H Program to Train Shooting Sports Instructors

AMES, Iowa - Iowa 4-H offers young people ages 9 to18 a new program called Safety and Education in Shooting Sports. The program helps teach safety, responsibility, ethics and sportsmanship to shooting sports participants through Iowa State University (ISU) Extension 4-H Youth Development.

Trained leaders are essential to the program's success, according to Judy Levings, specialist with ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development.

Ten people from Iowa will attend the 2004 Northeast Regional 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor Training Workshop, May 16-21, in Prospect, Penn., she said. This workshop will prepare adult volunteers to teach other adult volunteers through state workshops. The increased number of adult volunteers can help to make this program more available throughout Iowa.

After the workshop, the attendees will give three years to the statewide program. Iowa will have instructors in the following shooting sports categories: coordinator, shotgun, rifle, archery and black powder. The training instructors are responsible for doing at least one training session a year and also will facilitate the state leader training Sept. 17-19, 2004.

"I'm always amazed that people will volunteer a week of their time to give back to the kids," Levings said. "These people are giving their love of the sport to the children of Iowa."

Those attending the workshop are: Henry County-Robyn Lane; Humboldt-Darrin Adams, Art Hampy, Aaron Steffens; Ida-Carol Heaverlo; Keokuk-Gary Bickmeier, Bonnie Tremmel, Rick Tremmel; Palo Alto-George Hammond; Union-Steve Drevet.

Funding for the workshop and trip expenses comes from the National Wild Turkey Federation, E.T. Meredith Family Foundation, Pheasants Forever and the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

Those interested in the 4-H Shooting Sports program should contact their local county office of ISU Extension or Judy Levings at (515) 294-4764 or at jlevings@iastate.edu.
