Tree Steward Program Offered in Central Iowa

AMES, Iowa - In May and June, Iowa State University Extension is offering the Iowa Community Tree Steward Program in Polk County. The program is intended for citizens and professionals who wish to learn more about trees and tree care.

The course consists of six hands-on classes that cover tree identification, tree selection, landscape planning, pruning, planting, disease and insect management and hazard tree assessment. The classes will be held in the Des Moines area from May 18 through June 22. Each session will run from 6 to 10 p.m.

The cost is $30 per person or $45 for couples who share one course notebook. Those who complete the program and contribute 24 hours of volunteer service to their local community will be certified as an Iowa Community Tree Steward. Options for volunteer service hours will be identified during the class.

This program is sponsored by the Iowa Urban and Community Forestry Council, Iowa State University Extension, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Trees Forever.
