Food Supply: Food Safety and Security Workshop
AMES, Iowa--The latest information on food safety and security programming will be offered to food processors, food suppliers and other interested individuals at a workshop on Thursday, April 22, at the Adventureland Inn in Altoona, Iowa.
"Protecting Our Food Supply: Food Safety and Security Workshop" is sponsored by Iowa State University Institute for Food Safety and Security and ISU Extension in collaboration with the Iowa departments of Homeland Security and Inspections and Appeals; The University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory, State of Iowa Food Safety Task Force; and the Iowa section of the Institute of Food Technologists who also will sponsor a food industry suppliers expo and dinner following the workshop.
Highlights include sessions on hazard analysis and critical control points methodology, a state of the art food safety and assurance program developed by National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Pillsbury Corporation. Shelley McKee, from Auburn University, will discuss FoodSecure, a food biosecurity program that will assist food processors in designing protocols to ensure a safe and secure food processing environment.
Industry perspective will be provided by Richard Ryan, senior security specialist with Archer Daniels Midland. He will discuss the need for farm-to-fork security measures. Additional perspectives will come from speakers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Food and Drug Administration, State Hygienic Laboratories, and Iowa Homeland Security-Division of Emergency Management.
A follow-up Food Recall Workshop on April 23 will assist food
processors in designing recall protocols for their products. It is sponsored
by Food
and
Drug Administration and ISU Extension. A special session on dealing with
the press during a recall will highlight the need for open honest communication.
