Producers Can Learn About Distillers Grains at Feedlot Meetings

OSKALOOSA and MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa -- Iowa's ethanol industry is booming, and an ethanol co-product is showing promise for Iowa's feedlot operators. As a result, producers are invited to informational meetings in Oskaloosa and Mount Pleasant on March 31. The meetings are sponsored by Iowa State University (ISU) Extension, the Iowa Beef Center, and Big River Resources, LLC.

"Corn farmers are reaping the benefits of a growing ethanol industry," says Byron Leu, ISU Extension livestock specialist. "Likewise, feedlot operators can reap the benefits of improved nutrition and rate of gain through the use of distillers grains."

The agenda for both meetings includes an overview of corn processing by-products and recommended uses, storage, and handling of distillers grains. Additionally, producers will receive a demonstration of "BRANDS," a new ration software program available from the Iowa Beef Center, and a brief introduction of the economics of distillers grains use. Speakers include Leu, Dan Loy, ISU Extension, Joe Sellers, livestock field specialist, ISU Extension, and Ron Stover of Big River Distillers.

The first meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Mahaska County ISU Extension Office in Oskaloosa. The second begins at 7 p.m. at the Masonic Temple Lodge in Mount Pleasant. The meetings are free and no pre-registration is required. For more information, contact Byron Leu at (641) 472-4166 or visit www.iowabeefcenter.org. Attendees of the Oskaloosa meeting may also contact Joe Sellers at (641) 774-2016 for information.

The Iowa Beef Center (IBC) began operation in 1996 with a legislative mandate to support the growth and vitality of the beef cattle industry of the state. As a part of Iowa State University Extension, the IBC is the central access point for Iowa State University programs related to the beef industry. For more information about the IBC, visit the Web site at www.iowabeefcenter.org or call (515) 294-BEEF.
