4-H Camp to Get "Crazy" About Animals

MADRID, Iowa -- This summer, 4-H will offer many camps in which participants can get involved with animals such as Horse'n Around, Horses and Beyond, Who Bugs Bunnies and Nature Detective. "All of these camps are designed to teach campers the skills involved in handling animals and to enable campers to better appreciate nature as a whole," said Traci Stephens, program specialist for the Iowa 4-H Center.

For camp Horse'n Around, campers will spend three hours each day with instructors from Stage Coach Stables in Ames to learn how to ride horses. Instructors will work at each individual skill level. Participants will also learn horse grooming and tack skills as well as posting and lunging. In addition, trail rides will be offered. Ages for this event are 12-16 years.

Horses And Beyond, camp for ages 12-16 years, will include a visit to a mini horse farm and a Veterinary Clinic. Campers also will learn horse trivia for prizes, view track horses, and go on a trail ride on horse back. Campers will also have time for crafts, swimming, and campfires.

Campers will experience one week of hare-raising adventures during Who Bugs Bunnies, for campers ages 9-12 years. State experts will teach participants about rabbit raising including the different rabbit breeds, rabbit selection, how to make a cage, and the proper feeding of rabbits. Campers will also participate in other camp activities such as creek walks, night hikes, and camp fires.

Nature Detective is for campers ages 9-12. Campers will track animals, discover their secrets, and go on a night hike to track glow-in-the-dark animal tracks with black lights. Catching critters in the creek, building a birdhouse, hiking around camp, and fishing will all be a part of this detective experience.
