Asian Soybean Rust Education Program Offered on June 29

Asian soybean rust has received much attention recently as a potential new threat to soybean production in the United States. As part of a multi-state event, Iowa State University Extension will be offering a program to increase awareness of soybean rust issues here in Iowa. The presentation will be available at nine locations around the state on June 29.

“Soybean Rust: Issues & Facts,” is designed for anyone involved in soybean production and will include basic information about Asian soybean rust biology and management.

Personnel from the USDA Agricultural Research Service, the USDA Risk Management Agency and XB Yang, an ISU Extension plant pathologist, are the presenters. Topics covered will include factual information to dispel myths concerning the biology, occurrence and spread of soybean rust, advice on how to respond to soybean rust when it is detected in the continental United States and updates on approaches and prospects for management of soybean rust.

To learn more about “Soybean Rust: Issues & Facts” and to find a county office offering the program near you, go to: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/Pages/eccrops/040629SBRust.html.

The program is sponsored by the USDA Agricultural Research Service, the USDA Risk Management Agency and the North Central Region of the National Integrated Pest Management Network.

To help detect the arrival of the disease to Iowa, the state’s 1,500 certified crop advisers (CCA), certified professional agronomists (CP Ag) and independent crop consultants are being recruited to serve as first detectors. The first detectors will receive additional training on identifying Asian soybean rust and distinguishing it from other commonly occurring soybean diseases. Details of the July 6-9 training sessions can be found at http://www.aep.iastate.edu/feel/rust.html.

CCA CEU will be offered for the “Soybean Rust: Issues & Facts” event, but participating in this event will not qualify individuals to become a first detector. To qualify as a first detector, CCA, CP Ag and independent crop consultants must attend one of the July training sessions.
