4-H Names Iowa Horse Judging Winners

AMES, Iowa - The Madison County 4-H Livestock judging team placed first among 12 teams at the 2004 Iowa 4-H State Horse Judging Contest held at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. The Madison County team will represent Iowa in the 2005 national judging contest held in Denver, Colorado in January.

The four-member team scored 1063 points out of the possible 2,000 in the senior division. The Madison County team members are Katera O'Rourke, Katie Van Diest, and Deanne Day, all of Earlham and Joel McDonald of Adel. Their coach is Craig Nelson of Earlham.

Second place in the senior divison went to Washington County, with 1027 points. Priscilla Marlar of Wayland, Amanda Immerman and Tommy Hersberger both of Wellman, and Jillian Hotchkiss of West Chester were the team members. The Washington County team is coached by Jim Hotchkiss of West Chester.

Montgomery County was the third place team at the state event. This team was coached by Michelle Jordan of Red Oak and scored 985 points. Team members included Brooke Engstrand of Stanton and Lisa Palmquist and Holly Miller both of Red Oak.

Junior Team winners included teams from Story County and Washington County.

The objectives of the Iowa 4-H Horse Judging Contest are for the 4-H'ers to learn evaluation methods, practice decision-making and communication skills and develop the ability to select horses appropriate for a defined purpose.

Each contestant presented two sets of oral reasons describing their thoughts on why the animals were placed in a specific order.

"The ability to make a decision and defend it to others is a life skill they will use forever," said Mary Clancy, 4-H Ag program specialist.

Sponsors for the contest include the Iowa Horse Council and the Iowa 4-H Foundation Equine Endowment.
