Pork Workshop Offers Information and Individual Consultations
OSAGE, Iowa -- Swine producers interested in learning how to make and keep their operation profitable are invited to attend a workshop set for Monday, Aug. 9. Osage-area producer Wayne Fredericks will host the workshop on his farm free of charge. The workshop is sponsored by Practical Farmers of Iowa, in cooperation with Iowa State University (ISU) Outlying Research Farms, ISU Extension and the Pork Niche Market Working Group.
" It"s very important that producers know how much it"s costing them to raise pigs," said Fredericks, who also is an advisory board member of the Iowa Pork Industry Center at ISU. "Too many people don"t know that, and as a result, don"t know whether they"re making any money in their operation."
In addition to Fredericks, workshop presenters include ISU Extension swine field specialists Dave Stender and Mark Storlie and ISU Extension ag economist John Lawrence. Session topics include swine cycles and market outlook, cost of production and feed screening.
Fredericks said participants will be introduced to the group closeout spreadsheet program Group Tracker (tm), learn how to estimate their own cost of production numbers and receive individual consultations, if they desire. People should bring a feed sample for particle size testing. If they want a one-to-one consultation, producers should bring their Schedule F and feed tickets.
The workshop begins at 9 a.m., with a bratwurst lunch at noon. The consultations, feed screenings and a swine system tour will follow. The farm is located at 1700 350th St., Osage. Directions: From I-35, exit onto U.S. Highway 18. Travel east 23.2 miles to Rudd, then turn left (north) onto Glass Ave/County Road T26. Travel 10.4 miles, then turn right (east) onto 350th St. Go east 3/4 mile. The farm is on right (south) side of road.
For more information on the workshop, contact Fredericks at (641) 732-5724.
