Manure Nutrient Management Short Course Offered
The Iowa Manure Management Action Group (IMMAG), in cooperation with Iowa State University Extension and the College of Agriculture, USDA-NRCS of Iowa and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is sponsoring the two and one-half day Manure Nutrient Management Short Course on Aug. 23-25, 2004.
"The process of manure nutrient management planning and recordkeeping to meet environmental regulations is becoming a complicated process," says Angie Rieck-Hinz, Extension Program Specialist and IMMAG coordinator. "The days of hauling manure to the field and documenting the number of loads applied are long gone. Producers now face challenges on how to implement conservation practices that keep nutrients on the field for crop production and handle the consequences if those practices are not implemented."
The purpose of this short course is to train service providers, commodity partners, agency personnel and Extension field staff to prepare livestock and crop producers for future nutrient management planning needs in the state of Iowa.
This short course will include a combination of classroom and field activities and will focus on nutrient management planning to meet state and federal requirements for manure nutrient management planning. Participants will learn how to use RUSLE 2 and the Iowa Phosphorus Index to develop nutrient management plans for technical assistance and cost-share dollars through the USDA-NRCS. They also will learn how to develop phosphorus-based manure management plans that may be required of some producers by the IDNR.
Field activities will include a demonstration of current research practices to evaluate nitrogen and phosphorus use in cropping systems, effects on water quality, manure application equipment capabilities, residue management and calibration.
Registration is limited to the first 70 people to enroll. Registration forms, fees, a complete short course agenda and directions to the FEEL facility can be found at: http://www.aep.iastate.edu/feel/04mmsc.html. Credits for Soil Fertility and Soil and Water Management have been applied for through the CCA program.
