Golf Tourney To Benefit Iowa 4-H

AMES, Iowa - A "Going for the Green" 4-H golf benefit tees off July 19 at the Wakonda Club in Des Moines. Sponsors for the Iowa 4-H Foundation's eighth annual golf outing include Corn States Hybrid Service/Peterson Genetics, Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, Kemin Americas, and Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc.

The tournament is an 18-hole best-shot scramble with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. More than $1,300 in prizes will be awarded to individuals and low-scoring foursomes. Participants also have a chance to win a new John Deere lawn tractor at the hole-in-one contest.

Wakonda professionals Rob Brown and Tom Tays will conduct the pre-tournament clinic at noon. Chuck Hartlieb, record-holding Iowa quarterback during the Hayden Fry era, will be this year's celebrity golfer on the course. Other activities include an All-American lunch buffet, evening social, dinner and live auction. Participants can bid on exclusive vacations, tickets to sporting events and golf packages from popular Iowa courses.

The entry fee is $250 per person. Proceeds benefit Iowa 4-H'ers through program grants, scholarships, curriculum development, leader training and recognition opportunities. Iowa 4-H is a community of youth who learn leadership, citizenship and life skills through hands-on activities.

"The golf tournament is one of our major fundraising events," said Albert Grunenwald, development assistant for the Iowa 4-H Foundation. "It is estimated that we will raise around $28,000 at the event this year."

A few openings remain for teams and individuals. Tournament information is available online at www.iowa4hfoundation.org or by calling the Iowa 4-H Foundation at (515) 294-1537.
