4-H Foundation Offers Collectible State Fair Bear

AMES, Iowa –The Iowa State Fiar and Iowa 4-H team up to offer Champ, a limited-edition 4-H bean bear made especially for the fair's Sesquicentennial.

"The Iowa State Fair and the 4-H youth program have a long and wonderful history together," said Albert Grunenwald, associate director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. "The creation of Champ was our way to celebrate this partnership on a very special occasion."

Champ dons an Iowa State Fair visor on its head, has the Iowa State Fair logo embroidered on its chest and the Sesquicentennial dates (1854 and 2004) embroidered on its feet. Only 1,500 Champ bears were manufactured. Each bear is individually numbered on the 4-H identification tag that hangs, where else, from the animal's ear.

Champ is the seventh bear in the Iowa 4-H collectible bear series that includes: Clarion (1999), Clover (2000), Clarinda (2001), Curtiss (2002), Chloe (2003), and Freedom (Special Edition).

"We have Chloe bears and a few Clover bears available, but the rest are completely sold out," said Grunenwald.

The 4-H bears sell for $10 each with proceeds benefiting Iowa's youth. Champ goes on sale to the public at 9 a.m. on Aug. 12 in the 4-H Exhibit Building on the state fairgrounds in Des Moines. You can see Champ on the Web at www.iowa4hfoundation.org.
