ISU Field Day to Feature Bred Heifer Winter Grazing
AMES, Iowa - Winter stockpile grazing (WSG) is a concept that continues to gain popularity and interest. Research continues to show the benefits of stockpile grazing not only in money saved, but in reduced time and labor as well. As a result, the Iowa Beef Center is hosting a field day at the Iowa State University (ISU) Beef Nutrition Farm north of Ames on Feb. 25.
The field day, to be held from 2 to 4 p.m., will begin with an introduction to stockpile grazing concepts and implementation strategies. Next, producers will be able to see first-hand a group of bred second calf heifers in a WSG research program.
" A few pioneering cow-calf producers are already reaping the benefits of time and money saved," saysDan Morrical, professor, Animal Science. "As interest continues to grow, and as our research continues to evolve, we are happy to offer this informal introduction to winter stockpile grazing and the results we're seeing."
The effect of WSG is especially important for heifers, whose diet needs to be of a higher quality due to lower feed intakes than cows, as well as the increased need of energy required for a heifer's growth. Previous research has proven results of stockpile grazing for older cows, and with this study, Morrical and Jim Russell, professor, Animal Science, are evaluating the potential for heifers.
There is no charge for the field day, and no pre-registration is required. For more information, contact Dan Morrical at morrical@iastate.edu or by calling (515) 294 2904.
The Iowa Beef Center began operation in 1996 with a legislative mandate to support the growth and vitality of the beef cattle industry of the state. A part of Iowa State University Extension, the Iowa Beef Center is the central access point for Iowa State University programs related to the beef industry.
