4-H Wilderness Trips Slated for Rocky Mountains, Boundary Waters
AMES, Iowa -- Iowans age 14 and older can paddle a canoe through the boundary waters or backpack in the Rocky Mountains as part of the 2004 4-H wilderness trips series. The trips are offered each summer by Iowa State University (ISU) Extension 4-H Youth Development.
The series, offered throughout July, also includes a horse packing trek in Colorado for adults. Trips are designed specifically for adults or youths who are 14 to 18 years old. It is not necessary to be a member of 4-H or a strong athlete to participate.
"All you need is a positive, can-do attitude," Marsha Morgan, ISU 4-H program specialist, said.
In addition to offering an opportunity to see natural resources up close, the trips also help participants develop their teamwork and outdoor skills as well as a sensitivity to the environment.
For more information, contact your county ISU Extension office, call the state 4-H office at (515) 294-1017 or visit www.extension.iastate.edu/naturalresources. To register, contact pmondt@iastate.edu. Plan to register 30 days before the trip departs, because the trips fill up quickly.
