Register Now For 4-H Environmental Program

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa high school students interested in the outdoors and the environment may register now for Touch the Land, an environmental program held in conjunction with the annual Iowa 4-H Youth Conference. This year's conference, The Starting Line for Success, will take place June 29 through July 1 at Iowa State University (ISU) in Ames. Teens need not be 4-H members to attend.

Touch the Land participants perform hands-on activities to learn how to explore and shape the environment for the benefit of both people and the environment. This year, the teens and environmental experts will travel Iowa waters by canoe to learn the effects of living conditions on the quality of local lakes and streams and the surrounding land. They also will attend workshops designed to build awareness of ecosystem processes and to develop observation skills and techniques for collecting data.

Touch the Land participants will have many chances to interact with others at the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference during meals and evening activities. A number of social events are planned. Delegates to both events will stay together in ISU residence halls.

The cost of the Touch the Land program is $100.00. To register, contact your county ISU Extension office or the state 4-H office in Ames at (515) 294-1017. Scholarships may be available; to learn more, contact your county ISU Extension office.
