Grassroots of Grazing Workshop Offered
Want more return from those marginal crop acres? Would you like to earn more profit from your pastureland?
If so, plan to attend the Grassroots of Grazing Workshop on Wednesday, March 3, at Kinfolks Restaurant in Attica. The program begins at 9:30 a.m. with refreshments and registration (no charge).
The Hoover family of rural Guthrie Center will share what has been working in their cow-calf operation. Dennis, Jacque and Jerry Hoover will discuss how they manage row crop and pasture acres to feed their 125 head of cows throughout the year.
"We just got tired of fighting the battle," Jerry said. "We went through our row crop acres and our pastures, and everything balanced out perfectly to carry our cows all winter without any supplemental feed."
Knowing what your farm can produce in both good and bad weather years is key to a good management plan.
"Year-around grazing is a natural fit for a row crop operation, it gives us 12 months of feed," says Jerry.
Other presentations will include: Converting Row Crop Land to Pasture by
Bob Wells, ISU Extension farm management specialist; Weed and Brush Control
by
Jane Hanson, Dow AgroSciences pasture specialist; Profitable Selection and
Management of Grass Species by Brian Peterson, NRCS grazing specialist.
Lunch at Kinfolks will be provided by Dow AgroSciences and the program will
wrap-up with a discussion period and adjourn at 2:30 p.m.
If you have questions or concerns about profitable pasture management, you won't want to miss this program. Sponsors of the program include: Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, Dow AgroSciences, Natural Resource and Conservation Service, Iowa State University Extension, Local Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
