Tri-State Forestry Conference Scheduled in Keokuk

Ames, IA -- Forest landowners from southeast Iowa, northeast Missouri and eastern Illinois interested in learning how to better manage their forested land are encouraged to attend the Fourth Annual Tri-State Forest Stewardship Conference scheduled for Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Grand Theatre in Keokuk, Iowa. The conference runs from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

"People are recognizing that woodlands are becoming more valuable for many reasons and products," said Paul H. Wray, Iowa State University (ISU) Extension forester. "Woodlands provide a host of benefits including aesthetics, alternative crops, wood products, wildlife habitat, woodland edibles and alternative crops."

This stewardship conference offers landowners four concurrent workshops and is built around four themes: wildlife and forest health, forestry beginnings, working trees and forest management. Among the 20 topics to be addressed are:

* Migrant neotropicals
* Prescribed burning
* Weed control in tree plantings
* Integrating edible mushroom production and forest management
* Tree identification
* Marketing trees
* Pruning forest trees

The conference registration fee is $35 per person or $60 for couples and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Landowners interested in attending the conference should register by March 19, 2004; after March 19, a $5 late fee will be assessed.

A conference brochure, which includes a registration form, is available at ISU Extension county offices, Soil & Water Conservation District offices, and Natural Resource Conservation Service offices, District Foresters, Iowa Department of Natural Resources offices or by contacting Paul H.
