Beef Conference to Feature Special Session for Youth

AMES, Iowa -- A special opportunity awaits all youth at the North Central Iowa Beef Conference, coming Saturday, Jan. 22 to Hampton. An all-day youth session, including lunch, is offered at no charge to youth of ages 4th grade through high school.

"We are excited to offer this unique opportunity to north central Iowa youth who are interested in expanding their beef production knowledge and skills," says Russ Euken, Iowa State University (ISU) Extension livestock specialist. "Our agenda for the day is packed with topics and activities that provide an outstanding learning experience for Iowa's future beef producers."

Activities and topics slated for the youth session include a beef skill-a-thon, quiz bowl, bull and heifer selection, nutrition, meat quality, and learning about the beef digestive system.

Interested youth must pre-register by contacting their local ISU Extension county office by Monday, Jan. 3, and participants are encouraged to bring warm clothing for outdoor activities.

The conference begins with registration at 8 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m. at the Franklin County Convention Center at the fairgrounds on Highway 3. A registration fee of $5 for adults at the door includes lunch, a copy of conference proceedings, and access to approximately 30 commercial exhibits. For more information, call Russ Euken at (641) 923-2856 or e-mail reuken@iastate.edu, Dale Thoreson at (319) 267-2707 or e-mail dthores@iastate.edu.
