North Central Iowa Beef Conference to Feature Larry Corah
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University (ISU) Extension is offering a one-day conference for beef producers and herd managers in Hampton. The North Central Iowa Beef Conference is planned for Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Franklin County Convention Center on Highway 3.
A highlight of the conference is a presentation by Dr. Larry Corah, Vice President of Certified Angus Beef of Wooster, Ohio. Corah joined Certified Angus Beef (CAB) in 1998 and was responsible for creating a new supply development program to ensure product supply for the largest branded beef program in the United States. Currently, he oversees packing and the production division of the program.
Prior to his tenure with CAB, Corah spent time with National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) as director of production systems, and was a beef extension/research specialist at Kansas State University for 25 years. Corah's presentation, "Overview of the Beef Industry: Managing for the Future," will focus on will focus on practical management strategies for producers to implement in their own operations.
Other conference speakers include John Lawrence, Dan Morrical, Daryl Strohbehn, and Bryon Leu, ISU Extension livestock specialists, and Brian Peterson of USDA-NRCS. Other topics include pasture management, developing a successful heifer development program, new tools for sire selection, and "A Producer's Systems Approach to Beef Production," a presentation by Jeff Ryan, a Cresco beef producer.
A special feature of the conference includes a free special session for youth. This interactive program will feature topics such as nutrition, meat quality, economics, and selection. Interested youth must pre-register by contacting their local Extension office by Monday, Jan. 3.
The conference begins at 8 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m. A registration fee of $5 at the door includes lunch, a copy of conference proceedings, and access to approximately 30 commercial exhibits.
