Free Food Safety Training Celebrates National Food Safety Education Month

AMES, Iowa - Restaurant and foodservice professionals are invited to attend a free, two-hour food safety training in September compliments of the Iowa Hospitality Association Educational Foundation (IHAEF) and Iowa State University (ISU) Extension. Training programs will be held on Monday, Sept. 13 in Sioux City at Lewis Bowl and on Monday, Sept. 20 in Davenport at the Best Western Steeplegate. Sessions run from 9-11 a.m. or from 2-4 p.m. Reservations are needed. Call the Iowa Hospitality Association Educational Foundation at (515) 276-1454.

Each session is taught by ISU Extension staff and covers the basic principles of food safety and the importance of serving food safely. In addition, attendees will be able to observe and participate in hands-on activities that emphasize the most critical food safety practices.

"The demonstrations are part of ISU Extension's Food Safety Education Fair and are a unique way to present the DineSafe training," said Dan Henroid, foodservice and lodging management ISU Extension specialist. "Participants will receive instruction about proper handwashing, use of food thermometers, effective cooling methods, proper storage of food, and ways to prevent cross-contamination to help ensure food is served safely in their establishments." National Food Safety Education Month was created in 1994 by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation's International Food Safety Council to focus on the critical importance of food safety education for the restaurant and foodservice industry and to raise awareness of the industry's commitment to food safety training. The Iowa Hospitality Association Educational Foundation and its food safety training partners, including ISU Extension, have been supporting this important initiative at the state-level for the last several years.

"Food safety is always a hot topic among the dining public," said May Scannell, vice president of IHAEF. "Nobody cares more about the issue than the restaurant and foodservice industry. National Food Safety Education Month is a great opportunity for the industry to reinforce that message and communicate their commitment to food safety training to their customers."

ISU Extension and the Iowa Hospitality Association Educational Foundation, in partnership, provide a variety of food safety training opportunities throughout the state. For more information about any of the programs call IHAEF at (515) 276-1454 or ISU Extension at (515) 294-3527. Or, visit http://www.iowahospitality.com, or http://www.extension.iastate.edu/foodsafety/training/.
