Iowa State University Studies Corn Yield Response Using Hoop Building Solid Waste
WINFIELD, Iowa -- People interested in handling, applying or distributing livestock solid waste are invited to attend a demonstration plot tour in southeast Iowa on Wednesday, Sept. 8. The test plot is three miles west of Winfield on Highway 78.
Pork sandwiches and drinks will be served starting at 5:30 p.m. Tours and demonstrations begin at 6 p.m. and continue until dark.
Iowa State University (ISU) Extension swine field specialist Terry Steinhart said the tour will feature results from an Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship grant that is looking at nutrient values of composted hoop building manure and application rates for corn.
"The project objective is to determine proper application rates that achieve top results without overapplying the nutrients," he said.
ISU Extension ag engineer field specialist Greg Brenneman, who helped design the demonstration project, said ISU receives many questions regarding nutrient value and application rate of solid waste from hoop buildings.
"We have a check plot, a 10-ton rate of manure application and a 20-ton application rate," Brenneman said. "The plot also is divided into subplots with additional applied nitrogen. This should show whether we are nitrogen deficient and whether there is interaction of organic matter and nitrogen release."
Project cooperators are ISU Extension swine field specialist Tom Miller of Winfield, KCC swine education director Arlin Karsten, and producers Vic Strabala of Oxford and DeWayne Klouda of Solon.
