Free Farm Lease Forms Available

AMES, Iowa - September 1 is the deadline for terminating farm lease contracts in Iowa. Changes in lease terms or responsibilities can still be made after this date, however, if both parties agree. Putting all the lease provisions in writing will help avoid disagreements later, as well as provide documentation for income and estate taxes.

Sample lease forms are available at no charge from Mid West Plan (MWPS), a regional publishing service for land grant universities. Separate leases are available for cash leases, crop share leases, irrigated cropland, pastures, and farm buildings. They discuss issues such as rental rates, cropping programs, repairs and maintenance, and government programs. All leases were developed by Extension farm management specialists in the north central United States. The Web site is http://www.mwpshq.org/. Click on the button labeled "Free Materials."

For each lease form a bulletin that explains how to arrive at a fair and workable lease agreement is available for $4. Topics include how to set a fair cash rental rate, developing a flexible rental agreement, and other provisions to include. Besides the MWPS Web site, publications can be ordered by calling (800) 562-3618 or writing to MWPS, 122 Davidson Hall, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, 50011-3080.

MWPS also provides more than 100 other publications on topics such as designing and constructing farm buildings, managing livestock manure systems and drying grain.
