Forestry Field Days Scheduled

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University Extension and the Bureau of Forestry, Iowa Department of Natural Resources are offering nine forestry field days across Iowa this fall.

These educational programs are designed to show various management techniques for Iowa's woodlands and forests. Other cooperators in these programs are County Conservation Boards, Natural Resource Conservation Service offices, the Iowa Tree Farm Program and the Iowa Woodland Owners Association.

The following lists the dates, locations, directions and cost for the eleven field days. For more information, contact your ISU Extension County Director or the ISU Extension Forester at (515) 294-1168 or phw@iastate.edu.

Yellow River /Allamakee County
Sept. 10, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Headquarters, Yellow River State Forest
Topics include: From Logs to Lumber; Stacking and Drying Lumber; Insects and Wood; Wildlife Nesting Structures; Entomology Update; and Direct Seeding Evaluation.
Directions: Five miles southeast of Rossville on Hwy 76 to B25; 4 miles northeast on B25 to the Headquarters.
Cost: $7 for coffee, lunch and materials

Hardin County
Sept. 24, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Steamboat Rock School House Gym
Topics include: Management Planning for Woodland Owners; Improving Habitat for Wildlife; Wildlife Damage Control; Leaving a Living Legacy; and Field Tour on woodland improvement, renewing and regenerating our forests.
Directions: Steamboat Rock School House in Steamboat Rock, Iowa
Cost: $15 for coffee, lunch and materials

Dubuque County
Sept. 29, 1 to 4 p.m.
John & Barb Ludescher Tree Farm
Topics include: Herbaceous Habitat Development; Tree Protection; Timber Harvesting and Marketing; Sustaining Woodlands Through Woodland Cooperatives; Woodland Plant Identification; and Woodland Improvement and Pruning.
Directions: From Bankston, north 0.5 miles on Y17 to D17 (Asbury Road); east on Asbury Road 4 miles to the Field Day Site (15775 Asbury Road) OR from Dubuque, 5.5 miles west on Asbury Road.
Cost: No Cost

Linn County
Oct. 1, 12:15 to 4 p.m.
Larry & Twila Wiley Tree Farm
Topics include: Bottomland Woodland Restoration; Silver Maple and Bottomlands; Riparian Management; and Care and Maintenance of Plantings.
Directions: From the north edge of Palo, north on Palo Marsh Road 1.2 miles to Comp Road; east on Comp Road approximately 1 mile to Field Day Site.
Cost: No Cost

Lee County
Oct. 5, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Barn, Shimek State Forest
Topics include: Tree Identification; Sprayers and Calibration of Sprayers; Herbicide Labels; Chemical Control of Competition in Tree Plantings; Wildlife Food Plots; Information from Your NRCS; Gullies and Erosion in Woodlands; Log Quality to Lumber Quality.
Directions: From Farmington, east on J56, three miles; south on Forest Road 1 mile.
Cost: $8 for donuts, coffee, lunch and materials

Page County
Oct. 6, 1 to 4 p.m.
Nodaway Valley Park
Topics include: Tree and Shrub Identification; Shade Tree Planting and Care; Habitat Improvement; Attracting/Detracting Wildlife; and Woodland Improvement for Timber and Wildlife.
Directions: East of Clarinda to the intersection of Hwys 71 & 2; north on Hwy 71 2 miles to Nodaway Valley Park.
Cost: $5 for materials and refreshments

Tree Farm/Fayette County
Oct. 12, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Topics include: Broadcast Direct Seeding; Crop Trees After a Clearcut; Chain Saw Safety; Recognition of Iowa's Tree Farmer of the Year for 2004; Lucas Portable Sawmill Demonstration; Tree Quality; Timber Marketing Techniques; and Regeneration Options for Forests in Iowa.
Directions: From West Union, east on Fillmore Rd (Hwy 56) approximately 9.5 miles to Cedar Road (W51); north on Cedar Road 2 miles to Dove Road; west on Dove Road 1 mile to 4331 Dove Road
Cost: $10 for coffee, lunch, refreshments and materials

Cedar County
Oct. 14, 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Baker's Forest and Prairie
Topics include: Introduction to the Baker Property; Management Planning; Burning/Savannah Management; Invasive Species in Iowa Woodlands; Management and Control of Garlic Mustard; Crop Trees, Weed Trees and Timber Stand Improvement; and Woodland Succession and Oak Regeneration
Directions: From Iowa City, east on I-80 to the West Liberty Exit (Exit Number 259); north 0.5 mile to 290th Street; east on 290th Street to 975 290th Street.
Cost: $5 for refreshments and materials

Loess Hills State Forest/ Harrison County
Oct. 18, 12:30 p.m. to 4p.m.
Visitor Center, Loess Hills State Forest
Topics include: Growing Trees from Seed; Management of Forest Plantations; and Working with Crop Trees in Plantations.
Directions: Loess Hills Visitor Center is located on the west side of Pisgah
Cost: No cost
