ISU Experts Present Asian Soybean Rust Update

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University will feature a display and speakers on Asian soybean rust at the upcoming Iowa Farm and Field Fest and Farm Progress Show.

"The good news is that we believe Asian soybean rust won't have an impact on this year's soybean crop in Iowa," said Greg Tylka, ISU professor of plant pathology.

"Each day of both farm shows, Alison Robertson (ISU assistant professor of plant pathology) or I will be providing updates on the disease and sharing the details of the 'Fast Track' plan we've developed to help Iowa producers diagnose and respond when this disease arrives in the United States," said Tylka.

The display features a map showing regions in the world currently infected with the disease and a handout about the "Fast Track" program.

The Iowa Soybean Rust Team started work a year ago to develop a plan to help producers manage the disease when it arrives in the state.

Currently the disease has not moved into Central America or North America. Scientists expect Asian soybean rust spores to reach the continental United States via wind or move over the land bridge between North and South Americas.

The Iowa Farm and Field Fest will be held Aug. 26-28, east of Boone, Iowa, just north of Highway 30. To learn more about the ISU exhibit and to visit the official show site, go to: www.extension.iastate.edu/shows/farmfest04/homepage.html.

The Farm Progress Show will be held Aug. 31-Sept. 2, at a site just west of Interstate 35 near Alleman, Iowa. Details of the ISU display and a link to the official show site can be found on the Web at: www.extension.iastate.edu/shows/fps04/homepage.html.

Iowa Soybean Rust Team members represent Iowa State University, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, the Iowa Soybean Association/Iowa Soybean Promotion Board and the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
