Applying Manure this Fall? Check your Applicator Certification

AMES, Iowa -- Confinement site manure applicators, applicators hauling or handling manure from a confinement site facility with more than 500 animal units, and commercial manure applicators are required by Iowa law to be certified to apply manure in Iowa. With local fairs, the Iowa State Fair, farm shows and vacations on everyone's mind, the fall application season is right around the corner and applicators should be prepared to meet certification requirements.

Confinement site applicators must attend two hours of annual training to maintain their three-year license and avoid taking the certification exam when their certificate expires. The requirement for two hours of annual training may be met at this time of year by scheduling an appointment with your local ISU Extension county office to view the certification training tape.

New confinement site applicators, or those renewing their three-year certificate may either watch the videotape or schedule an appointment with their local Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) field office to take the certification exam. Certification fees and education fees must also be paid in order to meet the certification requirements.

Commercial manure applicators must attend three hours of training annually or take and pass the exam annually. Commercial manure applicators who were certified in 2003, but who have not yet renewed their licenses in 2004, may meet certification requirements by scheduling an appointment with their local ISU Extension county office to watch the three-hour tape or by contacting their local IDNR field office to schedule an appointment to take the certification exam.

Commercial applicators required to renew their licenses in 2004 will need to pay the late fee in addition to the certification fee and education fee. New commercial applicators may either watch the training tape or take the exam to meet initial certification requirements. Commercial manure applicators are reminded they must be associated with a commercial manure service.

All applicators must be certified before applying manure. For more information contact local county extension office or visit the Manure Applicator Certification Web page at: http://extension.agron.iastate.edu/immag/mac.html.
