ISU Returns Under the Hoops to the Iowa Farm and Field Fest

BOONE, Iowa -- The Iowa State University (ISU) exhibit is back at the Iowa Farm and Field Fest this year, with new information on crops, livestock, farm and power equipment, gardening and how to make healthy choices when eating carbohydrates.

"The Iowa State University displays offer a broad range of useful scientific information for farm, home and personal development showing ISU's dedication to science with practice," according to Mark Hanna, ISU Extension ag engineer and event chair.

This year's exhibit covers an assortment of topics.

Visit the Iowa Beef center display to learn more about the United States Animal Identification Program. This animal identity program is scheduled to be active in 2006 and will require radio frequency identification tags for all cattle, hogs, sheep and poultry.

See where in the world Asian soybean rust has settled, how to identify and manage soybean aphids, and take a chance at winning a copy of ISU Extension's new soybean growth and development publication.

Check out the oil from new varieties of soybean developed by ISU researchers. A new one percent linolenic oil will help food manufacturers move away from using oils that contain trans fats or hydrogenated oil.

Find more power at the Cyclone Power Pullers display in the form of a tractor designed and built by ISU undergraduate Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering students. The tractor recently competed in the powerpulling competition at the 2004 American Society of Agricultural Engineers' National 1/4 Scale Tractor Design Competition.
Discover how many and what types of carbohydrates you should eat each day.

Learn how to become a Master Gardener, see what perennials will grow best in your garden and find out what butterfly is being reintroduced to Iowa by Reiman Gardens.
WOI Radio will broadcast the Midday and Talk of Iowa programs live on Thursday and Friday from the show, along with market news reports.

The ISU auditorium returns this year and will feature everything from musical entertainment to the latest discussion on growing grapes to raising low linolenic soybeans. A schedule of presentations will be posted at the entrances to the building. The presentation schedule also will be available after Aug.13 on the Web at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/shows/farmfest04/homepage.html.
