Life in Iowa Coordinator Brings Business and Industry Experience

AMES, Iowa - Tom Ligouri has joined Iowa State University Extension's Life in Iowa program as program coordinator. Ligouri will be responsible for building relationships with the organizations and businesses that provide internships for the Life in Iowa students and expanding the program. Ligouri began his new duties on Aug. 2.

Ligouri has more than 30 years experience working with Iowa businesses and industries and most recently served as director of external relations for Iowa State's engineering college, where he developed and built relationships with corporate and industrial employers.

"Tom's years of experience with Iowa State engineering, developing relationships with businesses and industry in Iowa that included student internships throughout the state, will be invaluable for the continued growth of the Life in Iowa program," said Bill Tysseling, director of Continuing Education and Communication Services.

Life in Iowa encourages communities and businesses to collaborate with county Extension staff to identify student internship opportunities and design service projects based on community needs. Besides working as an intern, each student volunteers at least 100 hours on a community project. The total summer experience gets students immersed in community life and makes the Life in Iowa internships unique.

Students take a course in which they read, research, and write about the economic, political, spiritual and ecological aspects of a local community, which prepares them for involvement before they start their summer work.

In 2004 the Life in Iowa program placed 50 students in internships. The goal for 2005 is to place 90 students in internships. For more information about the Life in Iowa program go to www.lifeiniowa.org.
