New Camps Invite Youth to Put on Their Flippers and Grab Their Magic Wands
MADRID, Iowa -- Youth ages six to 16 can grab their flippers, magic wands or sewing machines and join the Iowa 4-H Camping Center for one of eight new youth camps being offered this summer.
The new camps will feature traditional camping experiences like sleeping in a cabin and group activities but will also focus on specifics for a week of summer fun and learning.
"We have fun at the Iowa 4-H Center, but we also work hard to strengthen each child's sense of belonging, independence, generosity, and mastery," said Traci Stephens, Iowa 4-H Center program specialist. "The atmosphere at camp is relaxed, yet, one that is competent, challenging, and stimulating."
Scuba School, Magic Mania, and Tag Team Quilting are a few of the new camps being offered, said Stephens.
At Scuba School, youth ages 13 to16 can take a dive into the under water world. Professional scuba diving will instructors train in scuba diving basics. Participants will also earn their lifetime certification as an Open Water Diver.
At Magic Mania, caring for creeping critters, transfiguration and herbology are just a tap of the magic wand away. Campers will have a visit an owlery, plan skits and ride a real train.
Tag Team Quilting offers youth a chance to spend a weekend with a parent, grandparent or relative while learning about quilting. Youth also can attend Camp Wanna-Quilt-A or Camp Wanna-Quilt-A-More and bring home a completed quilt project.

Reduced fee registrations for the camps and applications for financial aid are due May 15 to the local county Extension office. Youth need not be 4-H members to attend.
