Updated Pork Niche Market Publication Now Available

FAYETTE, IA -- A publication on pork niche market groups in Iowa has been updated to reflect market, industry and organizational changes. Those interested in learning more about these groups are invited to download the new version from the Iowa Pork Industry Center (IPIC) Web site. The publication, “Comparing Swine Niche Market Opportunities,” is available free of charge at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/ipic/information/IowaPorkNiche.pdf .

Iowa State University (ISU) Extension swine field specialist Mark Storlie created the original niche market group publication and updated the information in the new version. He said the first version has been in high demand since it was released in August 2001, and users deserve the most current information.

“Interest in pork niche marketing opportunities continues to grow among Iowa producers,” Storlie said. “We want to make sure people have good information about what’s available and how to learn more.”

The eight-page publication offers a comparison of five existing niche market groups in Iowa: Niman Ranch Pork Company, Organic Valley Pork Pool, Truline Premium Pork, 100% Berkshire Pork and Five Star Premium Pork Company. Information was provided by people from each of the respective entities, and the information is current as of Nov. 1, 2003.

For more information, contact Storlie at (563) 425-3331 or IPIC at (800) 808-7675.

IPIC was established in 1994 as a coordinated effort of the colleges of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. Its mission is to promote efficient pork production technologies in Iowa, maintain Iowa's pork industry leadership and strengthen rural development efforts. IPIC focuses its efforts on programs that are integral and complementary to ISU Extension. Through IPIC, Iowa producers receive accurate and timely information to make their operations more efficient and profitable.
