Media Tips for 2003 National 4-H Week October 5-11
Story ideas (with sources of information) to develop locally and run/air during 4-H week.
Gone fishin'
Iowa youth can spend time perfecting their angling skills at Iowa lakes through
the Fish Iowa program. The program offers information about fishing regulations,
ethics, fish identification and creative ways to fish (including fishing with
a pop can). Contact the local ISU Extension county office for names of 4-H members
enrolled in the project. Contact 4-H State Program Specialist Judy Levings at
515-294-4764 or jlevings@iastate.edu
for more information.
Diggin' in the Dirt
Why should city kids spend time outdoors, walk through prairie grass, dig in
the dirt? 4-H offers children and teens ways to connect with their food source.
Contact the local ISU Extension county office for program times/topics for kids
or for names of city kids enrolled in horticulture or plant science projects.
At the state level, contact Janet Anderson, 515-294-1018 or janeta@iastate.edu
for information about the Growing in the Garden curriculum; or contact Judy
Levings at 515-294-4764 or jlevings@iastate.edu
for information about natural resource learning opportunities.
Positive citizens or couch potatoes?
4-H projects encourage positive citizenship. Contact the local ISU Extension
county office for 4-H members who have made a real difference in their community
through service projects and leadership. At the state level, contact Mitchell
Hoyer at 515-294-1531 or mhoyer@iastate.edu.
101 years of developing Iowa leaders
4-H offers youth opportunities to learn leadership skills. Contact the local
ISU Extension county office for names of 4-H alumni who credit 4-H with helping
them overcome stagefright, learn how to organize groups, or present ideas. At
the state level, contact Brenda Allen at 515-294-1567 or bsallen@iastate.edu,
Chuck Morris at 515-294-1611 or cmorris@iastate.edu,
or Denise Schwab at 515-294-3187 or dschwab@iastate.edu.
I got the horse right here, his name is ...
Lots of children and teens dream about owning their own horse, but never have
the opportunity. 4-H offers these young people a way to learn about horses and
find resources and opportunities to ride and care for an equine companion. Ask
about the Horseless Horse project at the local ISU Extension county office or
at the state level contact Denise Schwab at 515-294-3187 or dschwab@iastate.edu.
Of pumpkins, hayracks and wind in the woods
The Iowa 4-H Center in Boone County offers families a weekend getaway Oct. 4-5
with a chance to live in cabins, gather around a campfire, get into the fine
points of pumpkin carving, and experience the great outdoors. Contact the local
ISU Extension county office for local harvest/fall/Halloween celebrations or
the Iowa 4-H Center staff --Traci Stephens (tracis@iatate.edu)
or John Roosa (jroosa@iastate.edu) or
call the center at 515-795-3338 for more information, photo ops, and family
camping tips.
