ISU Life in Iowa program invites community organization grant proposals
Ames, Iowa--Iowa State University will award grants to community organizations that employ and mentor undergraduate students during summer 2004. The grants support students working in locally-defined projects that revitalize and sustain Iowa's communities and help the students cultivate personal and professional ties with local community leaders. Nonprofit cultural and environmental organizations, local government offices, human service agencies, community-supported agriculture organizations and similar community-based organizations may submit proposals.
Grants up to $2,500 are awarded to nonprofit and government organizations to support students who intern in a community 30 hours per week and volunteer 10 hours per week for 10 weeks in the summer. Matching funds are required. Proposals are due Nov. 15.
Community organizations are encouraged to design student projects that provide an effective learning experience for the students. Projects should focus on providing public benefit. Projects that help students cultivate knowledge and understanding of local and regional culture and ecosystems are of particular interest, according to Nancy Bevin, director of the Life in Iowa program.
The Life in Iowa program provides students with a rich and diverse community immersion experience. Student interns prepare for community work in a spring semester class, and earn academic credit for the summer experience. Recipients of Life in Iowa community educational grants are expected to go beyond routine supervision by serving as mentors for their student interns.
An information meeting about planning projects and applying for grants will be 1-4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29 in the Pioneer Room, ISU Memorial Union. Pre-register by phone or e-mail by Oct. 27.
Life in Iowa is a service of Iowa State University Extension and ISU undergraduate programs. The Life in Iowa program also is seeking funding partners to offer additional grants to community organizations, Bevin said.
