2003 Hybrid Corn Performance Data Available
AMES, Iowa - Results of the 2003 Iowa Crop Performance Test for hybrid corn are now available on the Internet at the Iowa Crop Improvement Association (ICIA) wWeb site: http://www.agron.iastate.edu/icia/.
Published bulletins will be available in the December 13 issue of the Iowa Farmer Today and can be picked up at ISU Extension county offices the following week. Bulletins also are available from the Iowa Crop Improvement Association at (515) 294-6921 or ISU Extension Distribution Center at (515) 294-5247. These reports include performance information on yield, moisture, root lodging, stalk lodging, dropped ears, stand and percent of protein, oil and starch.
During 2003, researchers evaluated 480 hybrids from 50 seed companies and Iowa State University. Each entry was tested in one or more of seven districts throughout the state with three testing locations in each district. The state's 2003 average corn yield in these tests was 174 bushels per acre.
District yield averages were:
District 1: 170 bushels per acre
District 2: 185 bushels per acre
District 3: 180 bushels per acre
District 4: 181 bushels per acre
District 5: 199 bushels per acre
District 6: 152 bushels per acre
District 7: 154 bushels per acre
New for 2003 is the inclusion of tables listing the top yielding 25 hybrids in each district as a quick preview of the entire table which lists all hybrids entered.
In 2002, because of the increasing number of new hybrids being released by companies every year, eighteen new tables were added. These new tables average hybrid performances across districts to help predict which hybrids have the best relative performance potential for next year's growing conditions.
These data are also included in a hybrid selection program as a part of the Iowa Crop Management Database program. Information about this database is available online at http://extension.agron.iastate.edu/CMD/ or by calling (515) 294-6429 and requesting the Iowa Crop Management Database. This database is a one-time cost of $100 and then in subsequent years the data can be downloaded from the Web at no charge.
DTN (Data Transmission Network) will be including a summarized version of the Iowa Crop Performance Test for corn on its computer system.
Iowa Crop Improvement Association (ICIA) conducts the Iowa Crop Performance Tests in cooperation with the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station at ISU and ISU Extension. The program offers unbiased, third party, on-farm information to Iowa growers on commercial seed. ICIA provides performance information on hybrids and varieties for alfalfa, barley, corn, oat, soybean, triticale and wheat.
