Swine Health Management Workshops Set

AMES, Iowa -- A workshop designed for swine producers who want to reduce dependence on antibiotics for herd health will be held in two locations in mid-December. Rick Exner, Practical Farmers of Iowa farming systems specialist with Iowa State University (ISU) Extension, is coordinating the workshops along with two ISU Extension swine field specialists.

Dave Stender, field specialist in Cherokee County, is assisting with the Cherokee site at Western Iowa Tech that will be held Tuesday, Dec. 9, and Mark Storlie, field specialist in Fayette County, is helping with the Waverly site at the Red Fox Inn that is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 16. Registration at both locations begins at 12:45 p.m. with the program running from 1 to 4 p.m.

Exner said both programs will have similar agendas, including sessions on antibiotic effectiveness research and a grant-funded farrowing research project. Other sessions will be presented by local veterinarians and ISU staff members.

There is no cost to attend either of the workshops and no preregistration is necessary.

For more information on the Cherokee program, contact Exner at (515) 294-5486 or Stender at (712) 225-6196. For more information on the Waverly program, contact Mark Storlie at (563) 425-3331 or Exner.
