Iowa 4-H'ers To Attend National 4-H Congress in Atlanta
AMES, Iowa -- Twenty-three Iowa 4-H members will work with Hands on Atlanta, a nonprofit organization that conducts community service projects in Atlanta schools, low-income neighborhoods and parks, when they attend the National 4-H Congress Nov. 28 to Dec. 2.
Delegates to the annual youth leadership development conference, which emphasizes volunteerism, also will provide financial assistance to Clover House, a 4-H Habitat for Humanity project in Atlanta. The delegates to the 2003 congress are asked to bring 100 dimes to help fund the project. This year's conference, Growing into the Future, also will focus on environmental awareness and population, money, and food differences across the world through a global village exercise.
Iowa's delegates to the National 4-H Congress are selected through interviews and evaluation of support materials. They are chosen for their leadership, citizenship and overall achievement in the 4-H program.
"It is an honor to be selected to attend National 4-H Congress," Brenda Allen, Iowa State University Extension 4-H program specialist, said. "But it is also a wonderful educational opportunity. The delegates learn about leadership, service and cultural differences."
Joe Yedlik, Iowa State University (ISU) Extension education director for Jones County, and Nancy Schmidt, ISU Extension Southeast Area youth field specialist, will accompany the youth.
