ISU Extension and Farm Credit Services of America Team up to Deliver Crop Risk Management Seminar

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University Extension and Farm Credit Services of America have teamed up to deliver ISU Extension Corn Train: Strategies for Managing Crop Risks in 2004. This four-hour seminar, offered December 1-12, 2003, in 17 locations across Iowa, is designed to help producers evaluate and capitalize on various marketing, financial and crop insurance tools available that can maximize income and reduce risk.

Featured speakers from Iowa State University Extension include Steven D. Johnson, farm and ag business management field specialist, and Elwynn Taylor, extension climatologist. Johnson will discuss year-end income tax strategies, use of marketing loans and improving crop marketing strategies. Taylor will compare risk and uncertainty, discuss weather risks management and 2004 crop outlook determination.

Crop insurance specialists from Farm Credit Services of America will discuss effective ways of managing risk, tailoring coverage to assist operational cash flow, and present strategies to ensure maximum protection, not maximum cost.

The seminar will be presented in Alta, Carroll, Clear Lake, Corning, De Witt, Emmetsburg, Mount Pleasant, Manchester, Marion, Marshalltown, New Hampton, Newton, Northwood, Oskaloosa, Perry, Sheldon and Walnut. Pre-registration is required. A fee of $15 per person or $25 per couple will be payable at the door of each location to cover meal and refreshment costs. Farm Credit Services of America is offering complimentary admission to its customers. FCS America customers may call their local FCS America office at 1-800-884-FARM for information.

For specific dates, locations, times and registration details please contact Laura MacManus at (515) 261-4230, your local FCS America office at 800-884-FARM, or visit www.ManagingCropRisks.com.

Caption: In 1904, ISU Professor Perry Holden proposed a radical idea: create a traveling exhibit that would bring the modern science of corn culture to the attention of Iowa farmers. The result was the birth of the “Seed Corn Gospel Train,” which ultimately made 50 stops and reached an estimated 30,000 people. Today, this Managing Crop Risks seminar celebrates the spirit of this 100-year-old achievement in ISU Extension.
