5/23/03 For immediate release Contacts: Youth Activities Abound at Iowa 4-H Center This Summer AMES, Iowa--Youth looking for fun and adventure this summer will find a bounteous supply at the Iowa 4-H Center located near Madrid in Boone County. Camp sessions are open to all youth; 4-H membership is not required. Youth can pursue interests in archery, backpacking, canoeing, fishing or Frisbee. They can sign up for horseback riding, photography, quilting, rappelling or art. They might choose kayaking, nature study, night hikes, star study or eating ice cream for breakfast. Camp sessions include: Aerospace and DNA Complete Camping Camp Discovery offers first-time campers ages 8 to 10 fun and adventure through nature hikes, creek stomping, pond studies, swimming, games, and campfires. Shortened session is June 29-July 2. Cost is $155. Camp Bring a Big Person gives youth ages 6 to 11 quality time with an over-18 adult. Campers stay in an air-conditioned lodge and can swim, hike, make crafts, canoe, creek walk, play games and sing by the campfire. Shortened session is July 27-29. Cost is youth $95, adult $100. Water Camp H20 = Fun offers youth ages 13 to 16 similar experiences to Camp Water World and a river canoe trip down the Des Moines River where they will picnic on a sand bar. The session runs June 29-July 2. Cost is $165. Horses Art, Frisbee, Photography, Quilting Camp Ultimate Frisbee offers youth ages 12 to 16 a chance to learn the rules, skills, equipment and drills all ultimate Frisbee and Frisbee golf fans want to know. Session runs June 29-July 2 and $165. Camp Wanna-Quilt-A is for youth ages 10 to 14. They will machine-stitch a pieced quilt top and have time left over for swimming and other camp activities. Sewing machines and fabrics are provided and no experience is needed. Session runs June 29-July 2 and costs $200. Camp Art-rageous is open to youth ages 10 to 13 who will explore the elements of design and work on art projects with Iowa State University and camp professionals. Session runs July 20-25 and costs $275. Nature Study, Outdoor Survival Skills, Rappelling Camp High Adventure, also for youth ages 10 to 13, offers teamwork as campers overcome obstacles on the high and low ropes course and the 50-foot climbing tower. They learn about ropes, harnesses, helmets and how a belay team works together to keep everyone safe. Session runs July 6-11 and costs. $265. Camp Outdoor Adventure is for youth ages 12 to 14 who want to set up an outdoor shelter for an overnight stay, prepare their own food over an open campfire and find their way with a global positioning system. They will canoe down the river and have time for swimming and other camp activities. Session runs July 13-18 and costs $275. Camp Vertical Challenge is for youth ages 13 to 16 with advanced climbing skills. They will rappel the 50-foot climbing wall and take on the 20-foot ropes course. Campers experience a night zip, learn knot tying and practice safety measures. Session runs July 27-Aug. 1 and costs $265. Off the Beaten Track Camp You Can't Do That lets youth ages 12 to 16 relax the rules. They can order pizza, eat ice cream for breakfast, raid the kitchen, sleep-in mornings and have extra pool time.
