Take the Challenge at Survivor Earth Camp

AMES, Iowa--Youth and family campers challenge themselves to help the Earth survive during a June 12-15 camp offered jointly by Practical Farmers of Iowa and Iowa State University (ISU) Extension.

Campers become part of a tribe as they accept the challenge to use sustainable agriculture to help the Earth community survive.

During Survivor Earth Camp "you will learn how you can sustain life on planet Earth for humans and other earth creatures as well," said Traci Stephens, program director at the Iowa 4-H Center near Madrid in Boone County.

Campers come away with a better understanding of lake ecology, rivers, woodlands, wetlands, prairies and farms, Stephens said. "Mix in swimming, ropes courses, night hikes, creek walks and camp fires, and you also have four days of fun."

Camp is open to all youth and families. Youth under age 8 can attend with an adult; youth five and under attend free. The registration fee is $125 (adults $100). Teen counselors age 14 and up attend free and receive a $20 stipend. Scholarships are available. Register by June 2 to Practical Farmers of Iowa, P.O. Box 349, Ames, IA 50010.

More than 20 camping sessions await youth this summer through ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development. Membership in 4-H is required. For more information, call the 4-H Center at (515) 795-3338, e-mail tracis@iastate.edu, or print a copy of the camp brochure from the Web at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4hcenter/. Information also is available at local county offices of ISU Extension.
