5/16/03 Contacts: Outdoor Camp Teaches Survival Skills AMES, Iowa -- Youth ages 12 to 14 can learn outdoor survival skills during
the Outdoor Adventure Camp offered by Iowa State University (ISU) Extension. "You spend one night tenting along the Des Moines River," said Traci Stephens, camp program director. "You cook dinner over the open campfire you learn to build, and you prepare breakfast the next morning." An outdoor enthusiast, Stephens said, "You'll find out how to pack your backpack, use a Global Positioning System (GPS), set up an overnight shelter, and learn basic wilderness first aid skills and water safety while canoeing. This is excellent preparation for youth who want to challenge themselves and prepare for 4-H Wilderness Trips when they're older." Back at the cabins, campers can enjoy swimming, climbing, archery, crafts
and creek walks, Stephens said. "You will have a great adventure
and learn new things." More than 20 camping sessions await youth through ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development. Membership in 4-H is not required. For more information, call the 4-H Center at (515) 795-3338, e-mail tracis@iastate.edu or print a copy of the camp brochure from the Web at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4hcenter/. Information also is available at local county offices of ISU Extension. -30- |
