5/14/03 Contacts: National Satellite Series Addresses Cultural Perspectives on Parenting AMES, Iowa - Culture is a combination of thoughts, feelings, attitudes, beliefs, values and behaviors that are shared by a particular group. It is far more than heritage and plays a role in many things, including the way parents rear their children. Iowa State University Extension's Cultural Perspectives on Parenting, a two-part national satellite series to be offered this fall, will discuss how culture influences parenting and how family professionals can support culturally diverse families. Cultural Perspectives on Parenting will feature prominent national researchers and practitioners who specialize in family-centered practices and parenting in diverse cultures, according to Kimberly Greder, Iowa State University Extension family life specialist and coordinator of the series. The series is designed for professionals who work with families, including teachers, child care providers, social workers, counselors, psychologists, ministers and faith leaders, 4-H leaders, physicians and nurses, judges and law enforcement professionals and extension staff. College students who are studying in these areas also are welcome to attend. The Cultural Perspectives on Parenting series will be broadcast Oct. 23 and Nov. 13 in various locations throughout the United States. "Satellite delivery allows for a national broadcast to sites that are convenient for participants. Viewers will have the opportunity to ask questions via live call-in sessions and to learn from and network with others who share similar interests or concerns about parenting," Greder said. Details about the Cultural Perspectives on Parenting series are available on the Web at www.extension.iastate.edu/culture/ or by calling Joyce Howard at (515) 294-8754.
