5/12/03 Contacts: Camps Teach Water, High Rope Skills AMES, Iowa -- Youth can expand their skills in the water or on the high ropes during camps offered by Iowa State University (ISU) Extension this summer at the Iowa 4-H Center in Boone County. Camp High Adventure runs July 6-11 or July 20-25, during which youth ages 10-13 work to overcome obstacles on the high and low ropes course and the 50-foot climbing tower. Campers learn about ropes, harnesses, helmets and teamwork safety. Camp Vertical Challenge runs July 27-Aug 1 and challenges the advanced skills of youth ages 13-16 on the 50-foot tower and 20-foot ropes course. Campers learn knot tying, go on a night zip and tower climb, and practice equipment maintenance. Camp Water World runs June 22-27 or July 13-18 and offers youth ages 9-12 canoeing, kayaking, snorkeling, diving and water games. The 4-H Center features an Olympic-sized pool. Camp H2O=Fun runs June 29-July 2 and allows youth ages 13-16 to work up to more challenging waters as they kayak in the pool and canoe in the camp pond. Campers also take a three-hour canoe trip down the Des Moines River, pausing to picnic on a sandbar. Over 20 camping sessions await youth through ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development. Membership in 4-H is not required.
