3/13/03 Contacts: ISU Offers Video on Poultry Disease Outbreak AMES, Iowa - A video has just been released by an Iowa State University Extension veterinarian on a disease that is having a major impact on the California poultry industry. "Exotic Newcastle Disease and the California Outbreak" is a 53-minute presentation by Dr. Darrell Trampel recorded on March 4. It is available on a DVD disc (DV-5443) or on a VHS videocassette (VH-5443). The presentation discusses a brief history of Newcastle disease and its adverse effect on international trade. Trampel said the unique characteristics of Newcastle disease virus and the clinical signs (symptoms) and tissue changes (lesions) in poultry caused by the disease are described. The critical role of biosecurity and the inability of vaccination programs to protect against exotic Newcastle disease are explained. The importance of immediately seeking laboratory assistance to establish a diagnosis before the virus can spread is emphasized. A description of the current outbreak of exotic Newcastle disease in California and the key role played by fighting chickens in spreading the disease is given, Trampel said. The video is aimed at producers and suppliers who work with the poultry industry in Iowa, in an effort to keep the state disease-free.
