Alternative Manure Technologies Are Focus of June Field Day

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa Manure Management Action Group (IMMAG) and the Iowa Beef Center will sponsor an Alternative Technologies Tour at the Iowa State University Dairy and the Beef Nutrition farms from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Thursday, June 26.

Leading-edge research topics important to both beef and dairy producers will be discussed, including:

Composting/vegetative filter strips for solid manure handling. Tom Richards and Steve Mickelson, faculty members in the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department, will discuss composting solid manure generated by beef and dairy systems to stabilize nutrients and reduce odors. They also will discuss evaluation of composting systems, the potential impact of nutrient loss on water quality and how this impact may be reduced with vegetative filter strips for treatment of site runoff.

Alternative manure management techniques. Jeff Lorimor, ISU Extension specialist, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, will discuss his ongoing research of alternative feedlot effluent management structures, including solids settling basins, infiltration fields, vegetative filter strips and wetlands. Construction, management, maintenance and effectiveness will be covered.

Transportation will be provided to the campus farms. Those interested should meet at the north doors of the Scheman Building on the Iowa State University campus, Ames, Iowa no later than 3 p.m. Tour participants will return to the Scheman Building at approximately 5:30 p.m.

This tour also is being sponsored as part of the Iowa Cattlemen's Association's summer conference, slated June 26 and 27 at the Scheman Building.
