Popular Children's Book Now Available as a CD

"The Forest Where Ashley Lives," a popular Iowa State University (ISU) Extension publication, is now available as an interactive CD-ROM.

The book, originally released in 2000, tells the true story of a girl named Ashley and the urban forest where she lives. It was co-written by the father/daughter team of Mark and Ashley Vitosh. Ashley shares with readers what she has learned about caring for trees from her father, a town forester. The book was written to appeal to the children in the first, second and third grades.

The CD is designed for use in schools and was narrated by Ashley and Doug Cooper, ISU Extension market news director. It contains student and teacher versions, links to related Web sites and electronic versions of several ISU Extension publications on topics presented in the book.

Chris Feeley, extension forestry specialist, and John Smith, research associate, Natural Resource Ecology and Management, produced the CD. Smith also illustrated the book. "This CD is an excellent resource tool that expands upon the topics in the book and is meant to aid teachers in the classroom," said Feeley. "We feel the additional information on the CD will give students a better understanding of the importance trees play in their surroundings," Smith added.

"The Forest Where Ashley Lives" CD, (PM 1812A) and book (PM 1812) can be ordered by contacting any ISU Extension county office or the ISU Extension Distribution Center at (515) 294-5247. The cost is $5, plus shipping and handling, for the CD and $3, plus shipping and handling, for the book.
