Summer Lecture Series Focuses on Leadership in Family and Consumer Sciences Education

AMES, Iowa - The College of Family and Consumer Sciences at Iowa State University will present its second annual free summer lecture series in family and consumer sciences education this month. The lectures, which are open to the public, begin at 7 p.m. in the Scheman Building in the Iowa State Center on campus.

Francine Hultgren, professor of education at the University of Maryland, leads off the series July 16 with "Seeing Educational Change through the Autobiographical Eye." Hultgren's work focuses on the educational value of stories and autobiographical reflection. She will call her audience into the "community of leaders with soul." The lecture is in Benton Auditorium.

"International Family Issues - Focus on the Middle East" is the topic July 22. Sharon Redick, professor emerita of the Ohio State University, has extensive experience in a variety of countries, particularly Egypt, and believes there is great value in learning to understand and appreciate Middle Eastern family life - especially today. Her lecture will be in room 275.

The series concludes July 29. Merrilyn Cummings, associate professor of family and consumer sciences at New Mexico State University, will present "The Future Belongs to Us: Mentors for the Next Generation of Family and Consumer Sciences Professionals." Cummings' work focuses on mentoring strategies and relationships between seasoned and new professionals. The lecture is in room 275.
